I’ve just read quite an interesting blog post from someone in a blogging group I belong to and his post gave me food for thought. He was commenting on how some blog posts are perceived by others who are reading and probably want to comment on them.

I really think he has a point!

One of the actions we’ve been required to do in our blogs is to get used to making useful and interesting comments on other blogs within our group, but I have to confess with some it’s been really difficult to do as they are just not conducive to receiving comments.

At the moment I make a point of trying to make at least 3 comments a day on other blogs within our group (any more is a bonus if I have the time). but I have to admit to looking at a few and thinking wow I just don’t know what to say and clicking off it to add a comment to another blog in the group that makes it easier.

So  my dilemma is this, there are a number of newbie blogs out there in the group, do I just click away and pretend I didn’t land on it, or do I let them know I’ve found it difficult to leave a comment, I certainly don’t want to come across as a pain in the ass know it all (cos I certainly don’t know a great deal about blogging.), I also don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings either.

Be grateful for your ideas and opinions

Hi Kim, I can relate to what you are saying. There are many blog posts, which I cannot relate to and as you say, rather than be critical I tend to click off and move elsewhere. I do not see the point in making a comment for the sake of generating traffic. The dialogue between bloggers should be like a conversation, with all sides interested in what the other has to say. As JT says, our comments should add some value.
While I’m at it Kim, just a minor criticism, you seem to be using a non standard comments box, which I find a bit small. I like to see what I’ve written as I go along, but on here I can only see a few words.

Hi Richard, thanks for the input. I’m not sure what the problem is with the dialogue box and not sure how to fix it. Only happened after I installed Optomize (sigh)…

You can drag the lower bottom right hand corner to make it bigger apparently…

Oh yes, I never noticed that:-)

Maybe you have a different version of OP which gives a different style. I see you have also clicked the option for visitors to comment via Facebook or Twitter. On my version of OP it only gives the option for Facebook. I find this a little confusing…do you think it’s a good idea to have comments sent to Facebook or Twitter? Surely the original post does not appear on Facebook or Twitter, which makes any comments out of place. Maybe I’m missing something here? I have a lot to learn when it comes to Social Media…

      Kim:
I think you should ask the person if they want feedback. To me, that’s the safest way to go. Once you get permission, then go for it.

      Hi Kim
I know what you mean about sometimes finding it hard to leave a worthwhile comment. In some cases if it’s post I like I’ll just share it to my FB or Google+. Gives somebody else the opportunity to comment instead.
      Regards
      Steven
P.S.: Could one of your plug-ins be having a compatibility problem with your theme and “shrinking” the comment box?

      • kimstanderline

That’s a thought Steve, I’ll deactivate them one at a time and check

    • kimstanderline

      Ahh found it..

Mail chimp social plugin was causing the problem..

Thanks for the heads up, I hadn’t thought to check plugin incompatibility duh
