Ahh shiny object syndrome, a malady that strikes at most Internet marketers at some point in their online career.

I’ve always warned folks about buying stuff they don’t need, yet I have to admit I’ve bought more than my fair share of the latest online gizmo’s over the past several years that lay unused cluttering up my hard drive, often I’ve rationalized it to myself by thinking I was just reviewing stuff etc I can affiliate for, but it’s not always been the case especially in recent years.

So why do we do it, why do we spend out hard earned cash on stuff we’ll probably never ever use?

I’ve often asked myself that question, and I guess the simple answer is we rationalize to ourselves that we’ll use it someday or it will come in useful (put your excuse of choice down here)..

I first started looking at my addiction (cos sometimes I think that’s what it is) to buying stuff several weeks ago when I got billed $89 for a coaching membership I’d never ever used. (And this was my third monthly payment) and wham it hit me, the amount of money I’ve wasted over the years buying stuff I quite often knew I’d never bother with. I cancelled the membership and had a really good look at myself. I wasn’t really happy at what I saw.

I’ve just been looking in my drop-box and winced when I saw the ton of stuff I’ve bought over the years with a lot of it being PLR I’ll never use.. I have ready made complete websites in there, software that will now be completely outdated and I’m ashamed to admit it a membership site I’ve belonged to for God knows how many years that I’ve never bothered with since God knows when.

I think that’s what many of us do. we’re blinded by a new gizmo that comes onto the market and because of clever marketing etc we become convinced it’s what we desperately need to help us with our online endeavors, (and its hardly ever true)..

So my advice to you is this…

The next time you see a clever persuasive sales page that makes you feel excited etc about the product being promoted then go make yourself a cup of tea/coffee or whatever before you press that buy button, then sit and think about whether you actually want that product or not.

You may just surprise yourself and realize you didn’t want it after all..

BTW there are some genuine bargains out there and sometimes you would be a bit silly not to get them, but again rationalize to yourself whether you will ever truly use it in the future, if not, then walk away

As for me, I’ve got a list of to do stuff and that complete website is now haunting me) even though its a few years old, its still relevant, but I know I’ll never get to do it, so after our launch next week of EMP I’m going to get Debbie my support person to build it for me and then I’ll probably sell it on Flippa (job done) 🙂

How true Kim, those of us who have been around a while have stuff cluttering up our HD’s. Problem for me is that the bulk of my stuff is on the HD of an old Windows pc and now that I’ve moved to a Mac, a lot of it isn’t compatible and even if it is, I’m not sure how to transfer them across without having to pay for a new download. I think as we get older we get wiser and I have not bought anything significant for a while now. Except what we need for P2S of course:-)

Have you thought of using dropbox Richard, I assume its ok for Macs as well. You could just add them on your old PC then download whatever you can onto your Mac

Yes of course Kim, how stupid of me, I forgot about Dropbox. I can access it from my Mac. Thanks for the prompt.

Having said we learn as we get older, I’ve just bought some shiny new products for my Mac…it’s all JT’s fault, he just told the Facebook group about a bundle of products for $19.99 for Mac users. I would probably only use a couple of them, but still well worth it. LOL

      Hello Kim,

Well I agree with your post, Sometimes we waste money or time on a thing which may not be appropriate at that moment. Or it was just meant to be wasted.

      Thanks

Firstly, well done on creating some of your own products and getting them out there. Hoping to be joining you soon with my own products through John’s course!

I am an old hand at buying shiny objects, but have been very good for the past year or so as I lost interest in IM, but this has been resurrected by me joining John’s P2S programme. I am still resisting anything new unless recommended by John so no new unnecessary shiny’s yet and feeling quite good at the moment.

      Long may it continue
