I’m doing a course at the moment which includes being part of a blogroll and  we’re all encouraged to comment on each other’s blogs.

I was a bit leery at first about being a part of something like this as I wondered whether it would smack of link farming, but I thought what the hell and joined up as I was interested to see what would happen.

To be honest it was also a great way of dropping my links into other blogs as well. (Every little bit helps in the SEO game) and it’s nice to know other folks can legitimately drop their links in my blog when commenting. As long as Google is happy then so are we all….

Anyway I decided to do my bit every day and post 3 comments as a minimum on various blogs in my feed which I’ve done religiously, I even got up the other night after I’d gone to bed when I remembered I hadn’t done it for that day! (Now that is what I’d call sad), but it’s a promise I’ve made not only to myself but other’s in the group. and I try and keep promises as much as I’m able. I’d like to promise more, but it’s insane to think I can do that and run my online biz as well.

Anyway the point I’m nearly at is (for those of you reading this post and have blogs in the group). I’m finding it increasingly difficult to post on some of the blogs and the reasons are as follows.

1. You haven’t updated your blog for at least a week or even longer. (The last one I clicked on hadn’t been updated since Dec). Call me a miserable old bitch, (many do), but if you can’t be bothered to update your blog, then I can’t be bothered to post a comment on it!

2. I’ve left a comment but when I tried to submit it you tried to put me through so many hoops to leave my words of wisdom I’ve given up and left in despair.

I’ve just been on one blog where the blogger wanted me to not only confirm I was human but add some numbers up in the process. After struggling with it for a while we timed out so I didn’t bother leaving my comment and left to go hunting another blog out.

Come on guys, it’s early in the morning, I haven’t had enough caffeine yet to start adding numbers up, and I never ever resemble anything human first thing in the morning anyway so clicking to confirm I am is a bit of a lie

For the record, I appreciate no one likes spammers leaving comments etc, but there is such a thing as overkill. Personally I find Askimet works just fine on it’s own with the spammers and always have done on many of the blogs I’ve had.

3. Umm where did your blog disappear to?

I’ve clicked on a particular blog link a couple of times on the blogroll and the site is just not there, I hope the chap who owns (owned) it realizes its gone walkies, By the way, you should never leave your site with just index etc showing, shove something up there even if its only a blank page saying boo…

4. I’ve been on a number of blogs just recently which have some really irritating pop ups. I’m not knocking pop ups either because they are a great tool when used wisely, and I realise week 8 of our communal course deals with pop ups, but I’d guess you haven’t set them to pop correctly guys and popping every time I move my mouse over your post is really irritating.

If it’s irritating me, (and I’m obviously used to pop ups), then it will be irritating your other visitors and they may well leave, so maybe it would be a good idea to recheck the timings on your pops..

So that’s me for my Saturday morning rant

I now need to go do 2 things of great importance.

  • Have more caffeine
  • Check my blog to make sure I’m not guilty of anything I’ve just had a moan about
  • Slowly turn human for the day

I know that’s 3 things, but I did say I can’t count first thing in the morning…

What a fab piece of writing….I really like your style; mind you I am a fan.

I know exactly what you mean by the dreaded pop ups – I may put them up `sometime’ on mine, but personally I exit anything with a pop up, that’s my strategy.

Unfortunately I am somewhat behind on the course – I’ve been struggling and now my problem is in the hands of `support’ who I don’t think do weekends; so I will do `other things’.

It’s interesting to hear that some people haven’t added anything for yonks – my goodness – speaking personally doing this course and learning is what I am about. Might be a tad behind but heigh ho I will soon be there.

I love reading your posts they really connect well with me, so go have your caffeine fix or whatever you need – and I will go to my Kettle Bells class – and as IM folks say I’ll see you at the top.

      Every encouragement Kim

lol thanks Shirley, I’m drinking my second caffeine fix as I type. I remind myself sometimes of that advert for the cereal, do you remember it where the bloke wakes up a neanderthal and is only human after he’s had his cornflakes (or whatever it is).

BTW pop ups are an important part of your internet strategy, see how I use them on http://www.easymemberpro.com we’ve worked it so it only pops with another offer if you go to leave the site and if you click on the page, it will disappear, we get a lot of sales through that pop up so I know they work so please don’t discount them altogether

Okay I’ll take what you say as `being right’…..and thanks for your counsel. Nice site your EMP.

At present I would just like to know how to make my computer bring up websites so I can have them together on the same screen and so drag and drop. There is a gadget on my friend’s computer but not on mine…I guess I am a little way off from learning about coding :-)….This is where I on one of my `stucks’ – I’m now onto my 2nd cuppa and then maybe allow myself to do some gardening.

Thanks Shirley I appreciate your words. If I can be of any help, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Are you talking about having files grouped together on your desktop etc, I use Fences from here http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/

It used to be free but they charge for it now (I had to pay when I upgraded and I was well mardy). It’s worth it though as it keeps everything on your desktop grouped together nicely

Thanks Kim – it may well be what I need. I simply need to be able to open the dashboard, watch P2S video and access the download place all on my computer at the same time. I’ve had a look at your link and I’ve written them a brief email just to make sure – but hopefully you are spot on:-). Thanks so much – I’m all for making stuff easy.

Hmm its maybe not what you’re looking for for that, however I can still recommend it for keeping your desktop in order.

      • Shirley

Okay -point taken – thanks for advices

      Hi Kim,

I enjoyed you rant and the points you are making are absolutely true.
On top of that comes point #5 I would say, which is people taking advantage of having a link to their blog within the Widlink widget, but who are not bothered to add the widget on their own blog.

      Cheers and keep it up,
      Torsten

I agree Torsten and commented on this fact in the FB group

      Thanks for commenting

      Hi Kim,

Great rant here and really enjoyed it, have to say though the pop-up thing is so true, I noticed since installing the new pop up due to following the course, my traffic has decreased, but because I’m following the course, I’ll just have to bear with it. Like you said, it certainly annoying when you visit blogs that don’t appear to be “live” anymore and so what I’ve done also is created a bookmark folder with all the active P2S blogs that i have visited thru the plugin and verified are active, and then simply visit the blogs in the folder.

      Kind regards
      Sky
