Why you should be attending marketing events…

marketingI think we’ve all heard the saying ‘it’s who you know’ that helps you get on in life, and I’d have to say I’m a pretty big believer in it especially in the IM marketing world.

Back in the IM wild west of 2002 when I was a complete and utter newbie I was really lucky with the help I got from some pretty well known marketers of the time. I think they were really tickled a nurse was trying to make a go of it online and the help I recieved from them was amazing.

Some of these people were millionaires, and I remember it blew me away because they were kind enough to reach out and help. In those days the IM world was pretty small and in a weird sort of way, we all knew each other. You’d see the same people on the same forums, talking about how to better their craft and to help other people starting out on their IM journey. Heck I can remember helping Anik Singal out when he was just starting out, and look where he is now šŸ™‚ We had a great time and I’m proud to have been in at the start of what has now become an onlineĀ phenomenan.

So what did we all have in common??

We knew and trusted each other, it’s quite simple really to do business with people you know and trust…

As you’ll know (if you’ve read my About Me Page), I took 3 years off IM back in 2009, so coming back shouldn’t really have been quite as easy as it was. (Think dog years in the IM world when you’re away, folks soon forget you). So how did I manage to slip back quite so easily? I’d kept in touch with a lot of my old marketing friends mostly via FB and Skype, so when I mentioned I was starting back, they took notice…

I’d met a number of those people via Internet marketing Summits, I remember the first one I ever went to, it was awesome, I met folks in person that I’d only ever met or heard of online, I can remember being surprised at how ordinary they actually were lol. And you know what, youĀ rarely do business in the daytime, it’s mostly in the bar in the evenings. (I kid you not)…

I can’t emphasise enough the importance of networking with other marketers, especially if you want to do business with them. You can email their help desk to your hearts content with offers of a JV and you’ll likely never receive a reply because they get hundreds every week. (I was still getting them when I was offline)… So if they don’t know you then tough, unless you’re extremely lucky, it aint gonna happen. Meet up with them in the bar at a seminar, buy them a drink, and you’ve got a much more receptive audience… :-). I’ve been to a lot of IM seminars and each one has been worth every penny just in the contacts I made.

So where am I going with this?

If you’re in the UK on the 15th and 16th of March 2014 then Marketingsummit2 is being held in Manchester. I went to the one they had last year and it was pretty awesome, though I must admit I was a tad tickled because folks actully came up to meet me. (I found that a really humbling experience). I also met a lot of useful people and came away brimming with new ideas for products. (I bought 3 domain names whilst I was there).

So will you be in Manchester that weekend because I will and I’d love to meet you…

The standard price for tickets is Ā£199 (which is a darn sight cheaper than we used to pay for seminars), but if you get your skates on there are a few super earlybird tickets left at 70 quid, and quite a number left at 100 quid before it goes up to the full price.

I’m really looking forward to going and meeting lots of new people and developing lots of new ideas…
