Stack of beautiful pink stripe and polka dot present gifts with heart shape blackboard with Happy Mothers Day message.

It’s Mother’s day here in the UK and I must confess to feeling slightly maudlin over it as I don’t have a mother to send a card to any more. (I’ve been thinking about her a lot today).

My mum Sheila died 5 years ago in August when she was 74, she’d been ill for a number of years and to be honest it was a blessing for her in the end. She’d always had a fear of losing her marbles and having to go into a nursing home and both were looming up rapidly, she was getting more and more difficult to look after at home (her medical needs were so extensive), plus she had short term memory loss from a respiratory arrest she’d suffered a couple of years earlier.

Her memory loss was quite amusing in a gentle sort of way, you could have a long intelligent discussion with her about something, (she was a very intelligent articulate woman in her day), yet five minutes later she would have forgotten the whole thing. She was an avid reader (I’m sure I get my love of reading from her), yet those last 2 years she was reading the same book constantly because she could only ever remember the bit up to where she had had her respiratory attack), My siblings and I always had a chuckle when we went to see her and she’d put the same book down every time.

She could be damned hard to get on with as well, she was a stubborn old sod and she ruled her 7 children with a rod of iron, yet every single one of us (including my four brothers), grew up able to cook a 3 course meal on a shoestring, manage a minuscule budget and not one of us ever tried drugs (we didn’t dare). I’ve always said two of the greatest gifts she ever gave us was the ability to cook good wholesome fresh food and manage money!

She was stubborn and argumentative, but she could be the kindest person on the earth, she truly would have given you the coat off her back if she thought you needed it.

Miss you mum…

I lost my mother 18 months ago after her suffering with Alzheimers for nine years and it was a blessing for her in reality. She did not suffer pain during her years with the problem, but was not my “mother” at the end if you understand what I mean.

This week I am putting her ashes in with my father’s and it has taken me that long to get around to it but it was on Mother’s Day I made the decision to put them together again! It was difficult, but it was the right thing to do!

Best of luck on the course
